A good lock on a badly fitted door is a weak lock. We align the latch and strike so the deadbolt throws fully, and we use long screws in the strike plate so the frame holds if someone kicks the door.
The before-and-after photos on this page are one of our jobs: an old Dutch door with a worn knob. We removed the old hardware, filled and fitted the opening, and installed a new brass handleset that matches the house.
