About this service

Car Key Replacement, explained

Most cars made since the late 1990s have a chip in the key. A copy from a hardware store may open the door but will not start the engine. We cut the blade to your car and program the chip so it starts.

If you have one working key, making a spare is the cheapest time to do it. Waiting until you lose the last key usually costs more, because the car has to be programmed with no key to copy from.

FAQ

Car Key Replacement questions

How long does a new car key take?

Most keys take 20 to 45 minutes at the car once we have the right key on hand. Some newer models take longer to program.

Can you copy a key I bought online?

Sometimes. Online keys vary in quality and compatibility. Send us the part number or a photo before you buy and we will tell you if we can program it.

Do old keys still work after you add one?

Yes, when we add a spare. If you lost a key, we can often erase it from the car so it no longer starts the engine.
